Agriculture in the Classroom


Want to teach your students (youth or adults) more about Agriculture and sources of food, fiber, fuel, and numerous daily products? I have the program just for you.

Our  society as a whole is moving toward a more urban lifestyle, and in turn farther away from agriculture production. Most U.S. citizens are 3 and 4 generations removed from the farm, and our education systems are plagued with many misconceptions about agriculture and food production.

Since 1981 the USDA has organized efforts to incorporate agriculture material into classroom curriculum. Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC) programs are specific to each state and give educators the resources to expose their students to the world of food production. In Tennessee, Farm Bureau organizes the program and distributes the material. Five major program areas make up Tennessee AITC: Workshops/Teacher Training, Educational Material, Agriculture Ambassadors, Outdoor Classroom Garden Grants, Farm Day Tours.

AITC material is design to supplement and enhance teaching materials. A response heard from many teachers is “I would love to include agriculture education in my classroom, but I don’t have time to fit it in my schedule.” Actually, AITC is designed to include state mandated objectives for many grade levels. Skills like analyzing, comprehending, researching, evaluating, and interpreting, fall withing the AITC lesson plans. Even better, agriculture covers many classroom subjects: social studies, science, grammar, math, and many more.

So what are you waiting for? AITC is also great material for Agriculture Education efforts outside of the classroom.

  1. I LOVE ag inthe classroom! I went to the conference (the CA conference) last week and participated in their Farm Day in San Francisco the next day – it was a great expereience! I have a post up from the conference and will have another for Farm Day soon! Also, I just got finished with a 5 week ag unit in my first grade class! It was so much fun teaching them about agriculture – I will slowly be posting the activities and ideas from that unit.

  2. Thanks for the link to find out what’s available for each state…I’m helping with a healthy eating unit in my kindergartener’s class soon & this might be a great way to tie it all together: production to consumer.

  3. I am very proud of our county fair. We have been working with our county Board of Education for a number of years to educate students about ag, and the fair has won several awards. The Great Frederick Fair in Frederick County, Maryland, has an attendance of about 250,000 each year. We are about 60 miles from Baltimore and Washington, D.C. This year we bussed in more than 4,000 county elementary and junior high students during fair week. They are accompanied by teachers and parents. We have great cooperation with the schools and work within the school curriculum during the year. We have learning stations throughout the fairgrounds, games, and handouts to help the students learn more about where their food and fiber comes from and what careers are available to them in agriculture and related subjects. The schools also have follow up on what the students learned and saw at the fair. Ag In The Classroom has a trailer at our fair for everyone to visit.
