I rarely repost articles that are written about my events or actions, but this entry from CropLife following my recent award is worth sharing. The simple title “The Power of One Voice” hits the spot. We may not always believe that our voice matters in the large world of conversations, be it online or in person, but we really can make a difference. Genuine creativity, passion, and enthusiasm do make an impression on others. Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion in a reasonable manner. I’m very thankful for the recognition and hope it can be used to promote others who are also doing great things.
As individuals and as groups, we have the ability to cultivate influential conversations about agriculture. Ryan Goodman, blogger and manager of communications for the Montana Stockgrowers Association, is a testament to this idea. CropLife America and the Alliance to Feed the Future recently presented him with the first ever Communicator of the Year Award, which recognizes effective and innovative new voices that enhance the public dialogue about modern food production through multi-channel communications, including social media. Ryan was announced as this year’s award recipient on December 4, 2013, during the 15th Farm Journal Forum in Washington, D.C.
On his blog, “Agriculture Proud,” Ryan says, “Sharing the story of modern agriculture and learning more about how others perceive farmers and ranchers is important to me.” Ryan’s passion for agriculture stems from early childhood experiences on his family’s cattle ranch, and stayed with him as he pursued studies in equine science and cattle production. As his knowledge about farming and ranching grew, so did his views on how to communicate about his livelihood with others.
Social media is the basis of Ryan’s dynamic outreach. In addition to regularly posting articles on his blog, Ryan is a contributor to CNN’s Eatocracy blog, is active on Twitter (you will find him as @AgProudRyan), and has been a guest speaker for ag-related organizations around the country.
